China Creek Velodrome

Vancouver’s 250m China Creek Velodrome was built for the Empire Games in 1954. This track is where Vancouver Community College now sits, roughly at Broadway and Glen, near Clark. Destroyed in 1980, it was the precursor to the Burnaby Velodrome, the covered indoor track located on the Barnet Highway behind Burnaby Mountain.

Many of the top riders in BC were active on this track, including Ron Hayman and Alex Stieda.

The photo was taken when the track was brand new, looking west towards downtown. From the City of Vancouver archives, forwarded by Gordon Ross.
